Entries for July, 2008

July 5th, 2008

BL: intro

Bridging Leadership is the new type of leadership that is appropriate in promoting multi-stakeholder processes to address complex issues. It is about leading collaborative action to bring about social change. The leadership acts of Bridging Leadership involve three main segments – Ownership, Co-Ownership and Co-Creation.

The diagram below illustrates the bridging leadership process and the specific elements of the process. These elements are discussed in detail in the section below. Further, bridging leadership is a process that entails learning and change at the level of the leader, the group of stakeholders and the institutions they represent.

Ownership
The first segment is focused on the person and the clarity of his/her societal vision and response to realize that vision. It challenges the person to come to terms with his role in social change and in the process, facilitates personal transformation (Ownership).

Co-Ownership
The second segment examines the relationship among the actors, including those that are adversarial, who would spearhead the change process. It involves creating a sense of awareness on the importance of collective work and developing a process of dialogue and conflict management to build trust and develop a common response to the situation. It challenges the group to see new ways of relating with one another and in the process, to develop new forms of relationships (Co-Ownership).

Co-Creation
The third segment covers the work of the collective as they embark on a partnership to address societal divides and bring about change. The processes of managing collaborative action are given attention. Sustaining this action eventually rests on the institutionalization of the efforts. It may involve the creation of new institutions or transforming existing institutions to make them more responsive. The strengthening and development of a constituency for change is also important to press these institutions to reflect the desired change. Finally, as the task of social change takes its toll on people, finding ways to sustain the sense of purpose of the people involved is essential (Co-Creation).

Bridging leadership then is a work of transformation – of the person, the relationships among people, and the institutions they are part of.

BRIDGING LEADERSHIP ALUMNI COLLOQUIUM

27 June 2008 | Asian Institute of Management

Script of Francis Estrada

Good (morning).

Asia today is besieged with communities who are struggling with complex problems such as cultural or religious conflict, widening poverty gap, marginalization of indigenous people and unresponsiveness of the government. Development gaps, lack of good governance, latent historical, ethnic and religious animosities and some protectionist sentiments continue to exist despite the best efforts of many to counteract it.

Resolving these societal problems require credible leaders who can bring together the diverse and multi-sectoral groups, pursue long-term development programs and sustainable interventions. The country is in desperate need of leaders of this sort. Very few leadership development programs are made available and the concept of Bridging Leadership needs a truly active venue in the Philippine society.

The Asian Institute of Management through its TeaM Energy Center for Bridging Societal Divides aims to develop Bridging Leaders who understand the societal divide and make personal and committed responses to address the divide, engage critical stakeholders to take ownership of the problem and its solutions, and work with them to facilitate program interventions. Along with (TeaM), AIM through the Center has been able to offer a Fellowship Program that will increase the capacity of the bridging leaders to achieve their leadership goals within the context of the societal divides they seek to resolve.

This program is distinct itself. It offers the participants the opportunity to increase their leadership capital and instill it with values of trust, integrity, and stewardship; it improves their knowledge and skills to leverage their networks and relationship capital towards real and sustainable results; and it provides them the prospect to earn the confidence of resource providers that invest in building institutions of collaboration.

Today we celebrate the achievements of the program and of the leaders it has produced. We at AIM was happy to support your development. We hope that the time you spent with us has deepened your understanding of effective leadership principles, sharpened your skills, and reinforced appropriate values and behavior. We hope that what you had learned finds purpose not only for addressing your respective societal divides, but also for your improvement as persons, as the leaders of our time.

Through the Bridging Leadership Alumni Colloquium, AIM endeavors to give you the opportunity to share and learn from one another’s experiences of applying the Bridging Leadership Framework in your respective areas and professions. At the same time, the Colloquium will be a valuable opportunity to discuss future directions that can be pursued in further improving the framework and how it is taught and in further sharing the Framework to other institutions.

We hope that this event will be a positive step in the creation of a society without divides, and development of managers and leaders that understand the complexities of their communities, our country, Asia, and the larger world who are knowledgeable, capable and committed to the vision of sustainable and inclusive growth.

Thank you.

"Once there was a woman whose lifework was telling stories. She traveled far and wide, offering her wares: stories of adventure, suspense, horror, lust, all at a fair price. One noon in August she was standing in the center of a plaza when she saw an imposing man walking toward her, slim and hard as a sword. He was weary; he had a weapon in his hand and was covered with the dust of faraway places, and when he stopped before her she noticed a strong odor of melancholy. She knew immediately that the man had been at war. Solitude and violence had driven steel splinters deep into his heart, and had robbed him of the ability to love himself. Are you the one who tells stories? the stranger asked. At your pleasure, she replied. The man took five gold coins from his pocket and placed them in her hand. Then sell me a past, because mine is filled with blood and lamentation, and I cannot use it in my way through life. I have been in so many battles that somewhere out there I forgot even my mother's name, he said. She could not refuse him, because she feared that there before her in the plaza the stranger would shrivel into a little pile of dust - which is what happens to those who are not blessed with good memories. She motioned for him to sit beside her, and when she could look into his eyes, she was once again overcome with pity, and was moved by a desire to take him in her arms. She began to speak. All that afternoon and all that night she spun her tale, inventing a worthy past for the warrior, putting into the task all her vast experience and the passion the stranger had evoked. She spoke for a very long time, because she wanted to offer him the novel of his life, and she had to invent it all - from his birth to the present day, his dreams, his desires, his secrets, the lives of his parents and his brothers and sisters, even the geography and history of his homeland. Finally it was dawn, and with the first light of day she could tell that the odor of melancholy had faded from the air. She sighed, closed her eyes, and when she felt her spirit as empty as that of a newborn child, she understood that in her desire to please him she had given him her own memory: she no longer knew what was hers or how much now belonged to him; their pasts had been woven into a single strand. She had delved deeply into her own story and now could not take back her words; but neither did she want to take them back, and she surrendered herself to the pleasure of blending with him into a single story..."
